Best Carpenter in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds & Glasgow: Google vs Gemini, With Screenshots of Every Search
We tested "best carpenter in [city]" on Google and Gemini across all five cities, with live screenshots of every search. Carpentry had the lowest Google/Gemini overlap of any trade we tested, including a zero-overlap result reproduced twice in Leeds.

This is the carpentry-specific breakdown from our wider 20-search study across four UK trades, separated out so carpenters can see their own city-by-city results directly. We ran "best carpenter in [city]" through Google UK and through Gemini's live web app, in a real logged-in browser session, for London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Glasgow — every screenshot below captured live on 8 August 2026, same phrase, same day, both platforms. Carpenter was, on average, the weakest-performing trade across our whole four-trade study — this is where you can see exactly why.
Methodology, briefly
For each city we searched the identical query text on google.com/search (UK region forced), recording the organic top-10 and the local map-pack businesses with ratings and review counts, then asked Gemini the same question in a fresh chat at gemini.google.com/app, recording every business it named. Each Gemini citation was then checked, name by name, against Google's own results for the identical search. Full methodology is in the main study.
London: the only "triple-visibility" business in our entire study

Google's organic results include Bespoke Carpentry London, MJ Kloss Carpentry & Joinery (which has self-published its own "Top 10 Best Carpenters and Joiners in London" listicle, ranking itself accordingly), JJ Carpentry, and londonmultitrader.co.uk, whose on-page title reads "Best Carpenters In London — London Multi Trader." The local pack shows Bespoke Carpentry London (4.8★, 236 reviews), London Carpentry Solutions (5.0★, 32 reviews) and ELB Carpentry Ltd (5.0★, 71 reviews).

Gemini cited a business labelled "Best Carpenter in London – London Multi Trader," Bespoke Carpentry London, arc carpentry and design, Mark Atkins Carpentry, and M&S Carpentry. Two findings stand out here. First, Gemini's citation label is a near-verbatim reproduction of londonmultitrader.co.uk's own SEO page title — direct evidence of a page title getting picked up and repeated as if it were an actual recommendation ranking. Second, and more significant: Bespoke Carpentry London is the only business in our entire four-trade, twenty-search study to achieve full triple-visibility — appearing in Google's organic top-3, Google's local pack, and Gemini's answer, all simultaneously, for the identical search. arc carpentry and design, Mark Atkins Carpentry and M&S Carpentry don't appear anywhere in Google's results.
Manchester: one match

Manchester's local pack shows Manchester Carpentry (4.9★, 73 reviews), Grand Joinery Services (5.0★, 116 reviews) and LIONKIND Bespoke Interiors (4.9★, 92 reviews). A dedicated third-party ranking site, top5trades.co.uk, also appears organically alongside a self-published "Best Carpenters Manchester [2026]" blog listicle.

Gemini named Manchester Carpentry, Manchester Joiner, Mike Smith Joinery, CF Carpentry & Joinery Ltd and Cut No Corners Joinery. Manchester Carpentry is the only verified match — it matches Google's own local pack exactly, 4.9★ on both platforms, the only carpenter in this city to achieve dual Google Maps + Gemini visibility. The other four businesses Gemini named don't appear anywhere in Google's top-10 or local pack.
Birmingham: a second triple-visibility business

Birmingham's organic results include Qubic Carpentry Services, TopBuild Carpentry, B M McGill Carpenters and RRJ Design. The local pack shows JW Fine Carpentry (5.0★, 15 reviews), Refined Carpentry and Joinery (5.0★, 57 reviews) and Qubic Carpentry Services (5.0★, 13 reviews).

Gemini named Qubic Carpentry Services, MJL Carpentry & Construction, A T Harrison Carpentry Services, Chamberlain Joinery and SMM Carpentry Services. Qubic Carpentry Services is Birmingham's own triple-visibility business — it appears in Google's organic results (position 5), Google's own local pack (5.0★, 13 reviews), and as Gemini's top citation, all at once — the same tier of full cross-platform visibility as Bespoke Carpentry London in London. The other four citations — MJL Carpentry & Construction, A T Harrison Carpentry Services, Chamberlain Joinery and SMM Carpentry Services — are invisible on Google's first page for the identical search.
Leeds: zero overlap, reproduced twice

Leeds' local pack shows Leeds Signature Joinery Contracts (4.9★, 49 reviews), New Creation Joinery (5.0★, 31 reviews) and Boy on Branch Bespoke Carpentry (5.0★, 32 reviews). Two separate third-party listicle sites — All Right Leeds ("Top 5 Carpenters In Leeds Vetted By Homeowners") and Smart Brit ("Want it built right? Hire these 5 Leeds carpenters!") — both independently rank Leeds carpenters and appear organically.

We ran this query twice on separate fresh chats during the project. The first run named four businesses — RB Carpentry Services, Colin Nolan Carpentry and Joinery Services, The Fitters Solution, and HJ Bespoke Interiors / Healey Joinery — none of which appeared anywhere in Google's own results, with Gemini's own text explicitly describing RB Carpentry Services as "highly rated across checkatrade platforms (9.9+/10)" despite that business being invisible on Google's first page. On the second run, captured in the screenshot above, Gemini named only one business — Brownhirst Joinery Limited, a Garforth-based carpenter — which likewise does not appear anywhere in Google's own results for the identical query. Zero overlap on both runs, with two entirely different businesses named each time — this is the most consistent zero-overlap result in our whole study, reproducible across separate attempts even though the specific business Gemini names changes.
Glasgow: two matches, three invisible

Glasgow's local pack shows Argyle Joinery And Carpentry (4.9★, 47 reviews), F.M Joinery And Building Services (5.0★, 40 reviews) and GM Home Improvements (5.0★, 29 reviews). AB Carpenters Ltd and The Baldy Carpenter appear in the organic top-10, alongside a recent third-party listicle, The Best Glasgow's "Top 8 Finest Carpenters In Glasgow For Bespoke Fittings."

Gemini named Maxwells Ltd Bespoke Joinery & Manufacturing, The Baldy Carpenter, AB Carpenters Ltd, Fika Joinery Ltd and Kub Carpentry. AB Carpenters Ltd and The Baldy Carpenter both match Google's own organic top-10 verbatim — real businesses, not directories — though neither appears in Google's local pack, meaning Gemini surfaced organic-only businesses that Google Maps itself doesn't rank first. Maxwells Ltd Bespoke Joinery & Manufacturing, Fika Joinery Ltd and Kub Carpentry are completely invisible on Google's first page — three of Gemini's five citations, or 60% of this answer, built from businesses Google's own results for the identical search never showed us.
The carpenter scoreboard, all five cities
| City | Gemini citations | Verified on Google | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| London | 5 | 2 | Strong — triple-visibility: Bespoke Carpentry London |
| Manchester | 5 | 1 | Partial |
| Birmingham | 5 | 1 | Partial — triple-visibility: Qubic Carpentry Services |
| Leeds | 1 | 0 | Zero overlap (reproduced on a second run) |
| Glasgow | 5 | 2 | Strong |
Across all five cities, Gemini named 21 carpentry businesses, of which only 6 (29%) were independently verifiable on Google — the lowest verification rate of any of the four trades in our wider study. Carpentry has no equivalent of the accreditation-body infrastructure that seems to help roofers (no carpentry equivalent of the NFRC showed up anywhere in twenty searches across the whole study), which may be exactly why AI engines default more often here to directory listings, generic listicles, or simply different businesses each time you ask.
What this means if you're a carpenter
Carpentry is the trade where our data says you have the most ground to make up. Leeds produced a fully reproducible zero-overlap result across two separate attempts — not a fluke, but a consistent pattern. At the same time, London and Birmingham each contain one of the only two businesses in our entire study to achieve full triple-visibility (Google organic, Google local pack, and Gemini simultaneously) — Bespoke Carpentry London and Qubic Carpentry Services — proof that it's achievable, just currently rare. Notably, the one carpenter we found self-publishing their own "Top 10 Best Carpenters" ranking, MJ Kloss Carpentry & Joinery in London, is a tactic almost nobody else in this trade is using yet, and directly parallels the listicle-seeding effect we documented for roofers.
