Our five-city study of which electricians Google and Gemini actually recommend had a finding that should worry every sparky with a neglected website: the businesses Google surfaces and the businesses Gemini cites barely overlap. Two systems, both deciding who gets the work, reading different signals. The websites that win with both share a set of habits — and they are copyable.

The checklist

1. NICEIC / NAPIT front and centre. Certification is the first trust question in electrical work, for homeowners and for recommendation systems weighing credentialed businesses. Winning sites show the badge and registration in the header or footer sitewide, and mirror it on their Google Business Profile.

2. Named, reviewed, consistent. The electricians surfacing in our study — like Fletcher Electric and SmartWired Electrical Contractor — resolve cleanly: the name on the website matches the Google profile, the reviews are attached to that name, and the service area is stated the same way everywhere. Inconsistent naming across site, profile and directories quietly splits your reputation into pieces no system can add up.

3. Services broken out, not bundled. "Electrical services" is invisible. Rewires, consumer unit upgrades, EV charger installation, EICR reports, fault finding — each with its own page and its own plain-language explanation — is how sites surface for the searches customers actually type. EV charger installation in particular is the highest-intent electrician search of the decade and most electrician sites still don't have a page for it.

4. Per-town service pages. Same rule as every trade: a genuine page per area beats a list of towns in the footer, every time.

5. Safety content that answers real questions. Why do my lights flicker. How much does a rewire cost. Is my fuse box legal. The winning sites answer these on-page — and those answers are precisely what AI Overviews and assistants extract when a homeowner asks the same question conversationally.

6. Schema underneath. LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage structured data — the machine-readable layer that lets Google and AI assistants verify what you do, where you work, and what certifies you. In our study, verifiable citations consistently pointed at businesses whose details machines could confirm across multiple structured sources.

7. A quote path that takes seconds. Tap-to-call plus a short form (name, postcode, job) — not a seven-field enquiry monster. Electrical work is quote-shopped; the site that responds fastest usually wins the job.
